We are wrapping up our Native American unit in Social Studies. This week we studied the Northwestern tribes of the United States. This is one of my favorite areas of study. During the 1980′s my mom taught Native American studies at my school, focusing on the tribes along the west coast.
She still has a great deal of her materials and willingly packed them up, brought them to my house, and gave the boys a lesson. They learned about culture, housing, transportation, food and art of the Northwestern tribes.
We had a taste test that consisted of; smoked salmon, blackberries and red raspberries. My mom shared her stock of smoked salmon from Portlock (a real treat). For those of you who enjoy salmon you must try Portlock Smoked King Salmon! My boys don’t eat fish but they enjoyed eating this smoked salmon.
After talking about totem poles we finished up with an art project. The kids made paper totem poles. My mom gave each boy an animal; raven, wolf and killer whale. They then drew the animals on the paper totem poles.
